Inspired by ancient legends discover the secrets of Motovun and Oprtalj, small towns carved of stone on top of green hills near the Motovun Forest!
Mid-Istria is rich in fortifications that dwell on green hill tops. A legend says that a long time ago the giants inhabited the Mirna River Valley. They were so big that they handed to each other tools and big rocks thus building many small towns on the surrounding hills. Following the clues of the legend we visit two of these towns – Motovun and Oprtalj! Motovun is a monumental complex on top of a 277-metre high hill enclosed by walls that offer unforgettable views over the Mirna River Valley and the Motovun Forest. Inside, it hides a rich treasury of cultural and historical monuments dating back to the 12th century. Some scientists claim that Motovun is on the very crossroads of the Energy Meridians of the Earth, the so-called dragon currents that supply positive life energy and relaxation, soothe, calm and infuse spirituality. That may be the very reason why Motovun is on of the most popular Istrian tourist destinations! After Motovun, the narrow road takes you across a plateau to another small town, Oprtalj, the most picturesque town of Northern Istria. It was once a fortification enclosed by city walls but the houses have been built over its remnants so that there are only former gates to be seen barely visible between them. Every step you make gives a sense of the history woven into the stones, carefully placed in their position to make the perfect picture, whose silence enthralls the visitors with stories from days gone by. The walk ends in the magnificent setting of a tavern which serves some of the autochthonous Istrian delicacies. We end our tour in Baredine cave.
